Sony MZR70 Minidisc Recorder

Sony MZR70 Minidisc Recorder Review

I own the blue MZ-R70. I reviewed it in the fall of 2001. You may have already read my first review.pIt works fine. Recording from MP3s works really well, even though you have to be sitting there while recording. When I bought this unit, Mine came with the AC 3-Volt adaptor, the Headphones, carrying case, remote, owner's manual, and a 3 year warranty. Of course, now, it's over its warranty, but still works fine. pIf you read carefully, like me, you WILL be able to find the service manuals online, through SONY. I have printed out a manual for my MZ-R70, MZ-R55 and MZ-R50. All are really helpful when I need to know the inside of the machines. I am an electronics buff, and like to take care of my Mini-disc players, while knowing all about them. pThe 3-volt "supplied" power supply is compatible with the MZ-R55 also. Nice to know, especially when you like to have more than one power supply. pI am not crazy about the plain-looking remote that comes with the unit, but it does its job just the same. It would have been better with a clip on the back, to hold it onto my coat or shirt. pThe headphones work great, and hold lots of deep digital bass. I can enjoy both the accoustic side of songs, as well as the deep bass. Another thing, I like the bass control from level 0 to level 2 bass. Good when you have a headache but still want to hear music.pI still don't have any problems with recording, whether it's on a cheap disc or an expensive SONY shock-resistent disc. I think it's all in the way some people take care of their mini-disc players. Mine has always been well taken care of. pYou can't believe all the reviewers and what they say. As far I'm concerned, SONY hasn't made a bad product at all, when they released the MZ-R70. Of course, it's becoming out of date, on account of updating to newer models, but this item is still great.

Still the best - Good Stuff -
Now that Sony has announced its' plans to revitalize this format, the MiniDisc is here to stay.pThat's fine with me because I've been sold on it since the day I bought my first MiniDisc player five years ago.pEven in the extended record speeds it produces sound that blows the current crop of mp3 players out of the water.pIf you care about putting 9 million hours of music on something you can put inside a pack of cigarettes, buy an mp3 player. However, if you want something that is going to sound as good as the original CD, and still allow you to put 2 or 3 hours of music on inexpensive re-recordable discs, MiniDisc is the way to go.

Quick and Easy - -
I bought the PC version and it links easily via USB brGreat quality recordings and nice and portable plus the blank media is still a deal... great way to archive and make your collection really portable... fits in your pocket... endless hours since the media can be changed out.

Sony MD Walkman MZ-R700 - MiniDisc recorder

Sony MD Walkman MZ-R700 - MiniDisc recorder Review

There are many walkman minidisc players and recorders, but all of them seem to have serious faults. Some operate on battery only, others can record only through your PC. The Sony MD Walkman MZ-R700 rectifies all of those problems. You can record directly or through a PC. It can operate for hours on a single AA battery, but you can also plug in the AC power adapter. Minidiscs can hold tremendous amounts of music: up to four CDs fit on one minidisc. The reprduction of sound is superb. And it is small! I have used minidiscs for years and have never had to re-record a disc no matter how many times I play it. It attaches easily to any amplifier or headphones. I can't praise it too much. The new models of MD Walkman have attained extremely small size and lightweight through the development of a new optical pickup that has fewer components and through further integration of electrical circuits. This Jacket Size MD Walkman Player slips easily and securely into jacket or coat pocket and is easy to hold and carry. It features Easy Pop-Up Eject Mechanism that ejects the MiniDisc media and allows easy insertion and removal while on the go.Shock Resistant Memory resists bumps or vibrations while the laser scans ahead on the disc for virtually skip-free playback. Digital Recording Level Control allows you to manually achieve a consistent recording level on your MiniDisc no matter what the source of your recording. Up to 48 hours of battery life with 1 Sony "AA" Alkaline Battery is made possible by advanced technology that allows extended battery life beyond previous limits. Digital Mega Bass Sound System provides rich, deep bass tones with digital signal processing for virtually inaudible harmonic distortion.

Sharp MDMS722 Portable Minidisc Player/Recorder Review

I've had this unit for around 2 years now, and it's been the best portable music device I've ever had. pFor starters MD quality is quite good, while this is a portable recorder, the quality isn't as high as would be with full size decks, but it still compares well.pBy the new standards ('03) this unit is LARGE, when I bought it, it was rather reasonable. However the scroll dial is it's best feature. Like the Apple iPod, you can easly scroll through the music on the disc. The dial also makes naming tracks much easier. pApparently this unit is no longer available. But I would highly reccomend any MiniDisc unit. With newer MP3 players available, the MD is becomming sort of outdated for a person who wants to carry around their whole music collection. I've used this unit for many live sound applications (theater shows, recording) and MiniDisc is a highly advisable format for these purposes. brAlso if you are constantly making new mixes of music, (like cheerleadrs, DJ's, etc.) the MD format allows you to re-write easly. (No need to start a CD coaster collection) brRecording quality isn't stealar, but it's not bad for a portable. Last advice, I'd stay away from the MDLP format, it's 5 hours (300 minutes) on the same size disc as the 74 minute units. (more music, same data space = more compression=lower quality)

Sony MZ-N510CK NetMD Walkman/Recorder with Car Kit

Sony MZ-N510CK NetMD Walkman/Recorder with Car Kit Review

See more picture

First off, I'm only going to comment on the HARDWARE, because everyone knows that the Sonicstage software leaves much to be desired. Moving right along, this is a great entry-level minidisc player. I wanted a HI-MD player, however the prices are very high right now. I'm going to wait for the next generation players to come out because prices should come down considerably. With having said that, Atrac, as a codec, is far superior to MP3. My ripped Atrac LP4 tracks (highest compression, thus more music on a MD) sound considerably better than 128 bit MP3. Likewise, the LP2 sounds magnificent as compared to mp3. Overall, sound quality is typical Sony quality. Very good. The menu takes a while to get used to, but works well once you get the hang of it. This is my first Minidisc player, and I'm suprised that such an old technology can be soooo good. I was considering buying an mp3 player (hard drive player,) but I remembered that years ago I really wanted a minidisc player, so I decided to research them. Minidisc media are very cheap, and can be rewritten up to a million times (as Sony claims.) The discs are very small and fit in a pocket painlessly. Using LP4 on an 80 minute disc, you can have 5 hours of music. Pair that with an additional disc in your pocket, and you can have 10 hours of music within easy reach. Be honest, do you really need THAT much music close by? The price is a lot better than MP3 too. You can find this model new and online for under 70.00 shipped. Would you rather run or bike with something 70.00 or an Ipod for 300.00? Also keep in mind Minidiscs are very durable. Again, do you *really* need to have your WHOLE music collection with you while you're excercising? Minidisc is a viable alternative to mp3 for this purpose. The small size of this unit is also nice for running. Sonicstage isn'tas bad as a lot of people make it out to be. I "burned" 5 hours of music in LP4 on a disc and it took less than 15 minutes (my mp3 files are on another computer that I'm wirelessly connected to, so your time will be much quicker.) Overall, this is a pretty basic player/recorder that will be more than enough for most needs. br /br /In regards to recording with this unit, it is possible, and sounds good too. You will need a powered mic, however, and keep in mind that to upload back to your computer, you'll have to do it in real-time via your line-in on your soundcard. Also, keep in mind that by doing this, you lose all advantages of recording digitally as the connection through line-in is analog. But, the sound quality is still VERY good. In fact, it is very hard to tell the difference b/w the analog recording and original digital. If ALL you want to do is record, I'd reccomend getting and older model with a mic-in.

Amazon.com Product Description The MZ-N510CK Net MD Walkman recorder has everything needed to create great-sounding music mixes. In addition to transferring music at up to 32x speed (using its LP4 mode), the unit's SonicStage Jukebox software stores and manages digital music files, custom playlists, and music transfers. Bookmarking lets you program favorite songs in real time during playback, and supplied car accessories turn a vehicle into a personal music club. p The MZ-N510CK offers high-speed transfer from a PC via a direct USB connection, and it can record more than five hours of music on one 80-minute minidisc (using LP4 mode). It also uses Sony's skip-free G-Protection technology, which eliminates or reduces skipping during many active uses. The MZ-N510CK is compatible with the RealOne music player and the pressplay.com online music subscription service. It plays back ATRAC3 files and supports multiple Internet audio formats, including MP3, WMA, and WAV. p Besides the bundled SonicStage software and SonicStage simple burner application, the MZ-N510CK includes MoodLogic software, which goes beyond typical jukebox applications, letting you compile music by mood or tempo rather than simply by artists and song titles. MoodLogic corrects file information by identifying and retitling mislabeled tracks during ID3 tag cleaning. It also has a feature called Music Marker, which lets you "tag" music during playback. Once the device is reconnected to a PC, MoodLogic retrieves the marks, connects to the Musiclub Web site, and provides you with information about the song and artist and links to download new tracks, purchase CDs, or discover similar artists. The unit provides up to 56 hours of continuous playback on one AA battery and comes with a Remote Commander control and an AC adapter. pBHere's how you can use the included Sonic Stage Software to manage your music files:/Bbrpimg src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/sonicstage.gif"p clear=left Leading the industry in digital music, Sony NetMD will maximize your entertainment even on the road. It's okay for what it does - S. Pong -
A step up from CD players but not up there with mp3 harddrive players.br /br /It uses MiniDiscs which is a bonus for being small while also holding more than cds. But again it's not part of the player and it's just like any other cd: Limited amount of songs. Mp3 players will always store more, and it'll be there anywhere with you.br /br /And like cd players you have to fast forward if you want to listen to one song that fits your mood at the time. Fast forward will kill the battery and just drive that disc crazy.br /br /For the price it is nicer than say a small flash drive space mp3 player. ANd it does have the possibility of having more music than flash drive players and cd players. br /br /So it is nice to get this for the price if you're not a huge music lover. If you are a music lover, and you have music in the thousands like me then I would go for the 20 or 60 GB harddrive mp3 players. br /br /And that might sound bias, but I use to have this MD player but just recently upgraded to an iPod because my music was just too big to fit on so many MiniDiscs, and it was a huge hassle to want to listen to some Led on the train when the disc that it was on was at home.

Say no to MD - Disway - OMA
It's a great and stylish product but I won't buy one again. I know MD is very popular in Asia and other parts of the world, but I just don't see how is that better then MP3 players especially when the price on the MP3 players are getting cheaper by the days? I used to own 2 SONY MD players and got rid of them all!!! The sound quality is good only if you record the tracks in MD standard format and in real time. Anything other than that, is gonna sound crappy. I am sure many reviews have already covered that aspect. And the SONY software sucks too when it comes to copyright laws. They remind me a bunch of old guys trying to enforce the old rules. Do yourself a favorite and get a MP3 player like iPod or something.

Sony MZNH600D Hi-MD MiniDisc Walkman Review

I'd read a lot about the Hi-MD format so I wanted to check it out in person. I don't know how in the world I missed this when shopping, but this model DOES NOT HAVE A MICROPHONE, NOR ANY WAY TO USE ONE WITH IT! Well, shop twice buy once I reckon. To me that eliminates at least half of the usefulness of such a device, but it's my fault for not finding that out before buying.br /br /So why the 4 stars? Because, as a player it's awesome. The Hi-MD format is everything I'd read, I can't for the life of me fathom why Sony isn't doing more to spread the use of MiniDisc. Yah SonicStage is a pain (though better than I expected from reviews, I guess Sony did improve it) but the Japanese lessons music I put on the disc sounded absolutely fantastic. The interface on the machine is kinda clunky but for stuff like Japanese lessons that won't really matter too much since you won't be fishing around too much.br /br /So as just a player, I really like this little booger. I've read that some people get 34+ hours of battery usage I wouldn't doubt it. And the Hi-MD format is just terrific.br /br /I'd love to have a more versatile machine using Hi-MD, that I could easily record things with, move files around under Linux, and use OGGs etc. with. But this machine ain't it. It's just too limited, and only because of the iron paw of Sony. Shame. With a mic jack, and some software tweaks, this would be a heck of a machine I could be happy with for years. Now that my little experiment's over it's probably heading to Goodwill.br /br /Oh, and the folks I ordered it from (ship2you) did an absolutely superb job, thanks, it got to me in 2 days! I got a refurbished model for I think around (?) and everything was great.

Great sound quality, portable/expandable media, great battery life - Brian Shunk - Detroit, MI
I bought this little Sony Minidisc player as an alternative to the iPod. I bought an iPod (0) that lasted less than a year. Nice. First the scroll wheel broke, then the hard drive crashed. Done with iPods!br /This device is now retro - it's at least 5 years behind the times. But look at what it does:br /br /-Portable 1 GB discs that are encased in a durable plastic shell. Did I mention that you can put 45 hours on one disc?br /-Very small: you can definitely put this in your shirt pocket. About the size of a Gameboy SP. br /-Great sound quality: what is it about Sony music players that make them sound SO GREAT?br /-Great battery life: 25 hours on one AA batterybr /-Store your music on little discs instead of your hard drivebr /-Minidisc Media is small and durable. I have an old Minidisc player from 1992 (talk about retro!). It and my original discs are still around and sounding great. br /br /On the bad side, you must own a PC to use the Sonic software. I have a Mac, so I have to use my old laptop. A minor inconvenience because once you put your music to the discs, you are done. Some complain about the software, but look at the alternative. You have to use iTunes to add music on an iPod right?

Just OK - L. Metz - Cary NC
This is the second minidisc player I've owned. My first one (Sony MZ-R30) was exceptional in quality so maybe it isn't fair to compare the two... but this newer one is slow to respond, awkward to open, and the control panel is slightly hard to see. The sound is fine. My main complaint is the slow operating speed and clumsiness of opening it to insert the disc. I probably would not recommend this item unless you don't care about ease of use.

LG LFA840 - Micro system with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 / USB audio player - glossy black Review

I was on a mission: find a modest, space-conscious stereo system for my living room that included an iPod port, AM/FM radio, and CD player, could be wired through a subwoofer, and be relatively cheap without looking, feeling, or sounding cheap.br /br /Onkyo has a decent compact shelf system that starts at 0, but that was a little pricey for me, particularly when it doesn't even include an iPod port, much less iPod remote control. Other makers like Sony, Philips, and JVC have similar setups, tailored for iPods, for 0 or less, but everything I found in my browsing was either ugly, shoddy-seeming, seriously underpowered, or all of the above.br /br /Enter this system from LG, the Korean electronics maker formerly known as Goldstar. Like all current LG products it has a sleek, stylish, distinctive look. The two remote speakers are reassuringly heavy and rather futuristic-looking (the recessed disks on the front, contrary to appearance, are not some strange new type of woofer, but only decoration; the actual woofers are hidden behind grilles on the outer sides, hence the "3-way" speakers). The remote is compact but has the range of any standard stereo remote (the drawback of the tiny remotes that usually come with iPod products is that you have to get right up next to the unit for the signal to reach). The sound, for a relatively inexpensive bookshelf system, is really impressive (in part thanks to the exposed tweeters). I wired the speakers through a Polk PSW10 100-watt subwoofer (currently available for 50% off from Amazon, incidentally), and the combination sounds as spectacular as anything I could have hoped for.br /br /As much as I like it, there are a few minor drawbacks. The main control panel, the "eclipse lighting touch," is theoretically an upgrade on the famous iPod clickwheel but seems to have only gotten halfway through development: it's never consistent with how or even if it will respond to touch--so don't lose the remote because it's the only real way you can interact with the stereo. Your iPod will lose its place when you plug it in and/or turn the unit off and on, which can get annoying if you're in the middle of a big playlist. If you input commands directly into the iPod while it's plugged in, it will often stop responding to the remote until you unplug and then replug it back in (and you'll probably want to use the clickwheel for scrolling through a large playlist, as scrolling via the remote is slower than molasses). And if you leave the iPod plugged in while the stereo is off, for some reason the backlight will continually activate, which will eventually drain the iPod's battery.br /br /But these problems are small, and overall I highly recommend this as a compact stereo with great sound. Great sound, fan noise and user inteface not so good - D. Simonovic -
This is review of LG with video capabilities (LG LB163 in Europe), but should be same as this one with regards to audio.br /I was looking for a micro HiFi system with USB interface. After reading reviews I planed on buying micro HiFi system from Onkyo or Denon. In shop I AB reviewed all micro Hi Fi systems they had (Sony, Philips, Panasonic and Denon D37DAB), and Denon had far better sound quality than aforementioned, but price tag as well. I somehow didn't liked size (it's not micro) and look of LG, but when I tried it, LG sound was similar to Denon's, and I even had some preferences for LG sound, but price made me close the deal.br /br /Now good stuff:br /- Sound quality is superb, there is plenty of power if you like that. It will easily fill the bigger room with sound at lower volumes. Parties - not a problem.br /- LG has a mysterious Virtual Sound Matrix (VSM). It's not an equalizer, and I could only describe it as making sound more 'full'. Some music sounds better with it, some not.br /br /Bad stuff: br /- I use lower volumes, and at silent parts of music I can hear fan noise if I concentrate. At slightly higher volumes it's not an issue. I started observing it after couple of days so it is really not that bad, but still, I will replace it with some silent computer sinks / heat pipes just for fun. Bare in mind this LG is with video capabilities and this may be reason for fan noise (video chip inside was warm, although I didn't connect it to TV). Btw. the work inside looks quite good.br /- User interface is not great. Display is not matrix. It is segmented display, and it is not easy to navigate to different artist if USB is used. With TV connected you would probably have real menu, but I didn't tried it. Remote is not the most responsive one.br /- LG FB163 has DVD (instead of CD). At lower volumes you can hear spinning of the CDs, but it is comparable with fan noise.br /- There is one more remark, although small. Front bottom 'speaker' is not a speaker. It is a decoration. I don't like decorations / fake stuffs. I would prefer if they didn't placed it at all.br /br /Bottom line: If you think you will need / use 160W of power, go for it. If you prefer lower volumes, and can not imagine your self needing more than 20-40W, and have more money to spend, go with Denon or Onkyo.

Great product with some slightly frusterating flaws - P. Thomas - Clarksville, TN USA
My wife and I ordered this LG micro system hoping to get an easy to use, elegantly designed, and great sounding audio system. LG delivered 100% on all but the "ease of use." The "iPod" wheel is frustrating to use. It is a great idea that doesn't fully deliver. It is usable, but be patient. The trick is to use the outer edges of the the wheel with a light touch. Other than that, the system sounds great at all levels and all ranges - great bass. The looks - well, just look at the picture, very elegant.

Sharp MDSR60S Minidisc Player/Recorder

Sharp MDSR60S Minidisc Player/Recorder Review

I've had this Minidisc recorder for at least three years now, and I've never had ANY problems with it whatsoever. If you want to record MP3's from your computer, you need to also buy a Mini-to-Mini cord to go along with it...I'd also reccomend buying some software to make it easier to record all your songs in order, and to keep them organized. ... The battery life of this recorder could be a little bit better, but considering that it comes with a rechargeable battery, I can't complain. It's extremely durable (I take it up skiing with me all the time.), and the remote comes in handy for things like this. I'd reccomend getting a different pair of headphones, because the ones that comes with it are pretty flimsy. Other than that, it's an EXCELLENT investment, and I'd reccomend it to anybody!

Pumps like a Sharp! - Thomas L. Smith - Ann Arbor, MI United States
I had a Sharp 722 that i loved, unfortunately i beat the [snot] out of it snowboarding for 4 years. When it finally gave up the ghost i bought a Sony because thats all that retailers carry anymore..... it sounded like my 722 with the bass turned off and the volume at 75%, in short it was not up to the task of rockin me down the slopes like my old Sharp. So i bought this SR60 unit, it cranks just as hard as my old 722 it is a lot lighter and has all the same features except it only has 10 sec shock memory. So far this hasn't proved to be a problem, i shook it like crazy for a minute when i first got it and it only skipped once. Dont hesitate on this unless your into classical music only and you need to buy locally.

Not so good - -
I bought this minidisc player about two years ago, and since then, it's broken twice. The first time, I sent it in and the people at sharp fixed it. The second time it broke, the tried to fix it, but when they sent it back to me, it still didnt work. Now, the lid to the battery holder has come off, and so it is completely worthless. This same thing happend to a friend who had the exact same model

Sony MZ-N505 Net MD Walkman Player/Recorder (Gold) Review

If you can stream it, you can record it. Anything that has a headphones output can be recorded into the MD. I'm talking about real time recording. Yes the Mp3 player can download music files more quickly but you can not record in real time with the Mp3 players. For example, I like to record internet radio stations. Also I have an internet music player service for a month that allows me to listen to a HUGE selection of music all day long but I can not transfer any song to an Mp3 player with out actually buying the track for . Well as I said above... if you can stream it you can record it to MD... you know what I'm sayin? Also the long play of the MD allows about 150 minutes per MD. I use this rate for everything. Most of the internet DJ mixes (shows) I like are 2 hours long so it works well for me. Also I have about a dozed MD's that I keep in circulation, because they are re-recordable. I've erased and recorded on each disk god knows how many times. I own the Sony Recording MD Walkman MZ-R700... I bought it 6 years ago and it still plays/records... however its on its last leg... that is the reason I'm browsing through the Amazon store looking to buy a new one. Also a single AA battery will play for what I'm guessing to be about 40 hours, however a fresh AA will only record for about 1-2 hours (so keep the AC adapter handy for recording. Also there are 2 inputs for recording. One is the MIC in (yes you can also record live music or your professors lecture using a microphone) however i notice that input tends to introduce static and white noise. this can be a probem if you are hoping the MD player will automaticall create a new track number when it picks up a second or two of silence. the second input is optical. The MD player comes with a converter so you can convert the USB output to an Optical signal that records clean. One draw back to that I've noticed (and you computer folks out ther can solve this problem) that when you use the USB output the sound from the headphones output on your computer turns off. You can only monitor (listen) to what you are recording via the headphones output on the MD player... this sucks if you are trying to queue up songs in a mix or recording only segments of a radio program or a comedy show or something.

MD Player problems - Solon J. Bing -
when i went to purchase this product it said that it "was like new". so with the seller saying that on the page makes on believe that the only things that could be wrong with it is a mark in tha paint or screen, stuff like that. well when i got the product here. i can't hear sound out of the left side unless i use a rubberband to press the plug towards the backside of the device just to maybe hear full sound if i don't move once i get it to work. so needless to say i'm a bit unhappy with what was told to me and what i recieved.

GREAT AND INGENIOUS INVENTION - JON STRICKLAND - Smithfield, NC United States
The Sony MZ-N505, when it first came out, was like a miracle gadget. After years of allotting the minidisc storage capacity to a maximum of 74 or 80 minutes per disc, Sony invented the LP2 and LP4 recording modes which allowed at least three hours and five hours, respectively. A great product this truly is, and it almost surprised me that there was not the marketing breakthrough that would vanquish companies who were pushing the non-minidisc MP3 players. br /br /I thought and still think that the competitors' products were inferior; however, the latter group had a dual advantage: where Sony was limited to the seemingly obsolete ATRAC/SonicStage software, their gadgets could download and burn CDs using Windows Media Player, Real Player, Napster and the like. This lone fact is what I think discouraged MD sales. Sony apparently has given up on this great invention, which I think is a shame.br /br /Since the Sony MZ-505, there has been the HI-MD format, which allows a greater recording storage capacity than LP2 or LP4. Also, this particular line allows PCM quality recording but at a lower storage capacity. Still, the MZ-505 is a great item with its prior NET-MD capabilities. With the minidisc-compatible technology that has been created since 2002, when I purchased this item, there is so much that you can still do! br /br /There are companies such as Xitel and M-Audio that have come out with driver updates and products that have made this particular product compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista so that you can access major nonsubscription MP3 and WAV file downloadable sources. br /br /So for those who have thought of discarding their MD players and discs, I say don't!br /

Sony MZ-N1 Net MD Walkman Player/Recorder with USB

Sony MZ-N1 Net MD Walkman Player/Recorder with USB Review

Unlike in the UK, the Minidisc (MD) technology never really caught on here in North America, most likely due to the fact that the media and players are pricier than the relatively inexpensive CDR or MP3 options. As a technology, however, it far surpasses anything on the market, so buying one for me was an easy decision. I decided to go with the Sony MZ-N1 for a variety of reasons, and it has more than lived up to my expectations. pPros:p1. Build Quality. Many of the lower-end MD players/recorders are made of plastic which makes me question the durability. The MZ-N1 is made of solid metal, and can easily withstand the expected bangs and clashes in your bag or pocket. The carrying case that's provided goes further to help protect the player. p2. The USB cradle makes transferring songs fast and incredibly easy. The player comes with the required software that functions exactly like regular CD burning software. It works fast, meaning that burning an entire album takes around 5-7 minutes, rather than other players where you need to record all the songs as they are being played. The burning application is also remarkably easy to use, and automatically looks up the song titles and insets to track breakers for you. p3. The remote control is excellent, and will make you wonder how you ever got along without one. The display is backlit, and displays the song title, along with other vital. There is a small learning curve with the volume control, since one dial is for both skipping and adjusting the volume. You need to "snap" the dial upwards to access the volume control, and snap down again to skip through the tracks. This takes a little bit to get used to, but it is better because there are less buttons to fiddle with. p4. The jog dial on the player itself makes accessing particular tracks quick and easy. In this respect, it is very similar to an MP3 player. p5. Battery Life. The rechargeable battery provided is not the best, but when combined with a dry battery, this player will last for weeks before a change and recharge is needed. As someone who is used to using a CD player that required a change at least once a week, this is especially useful, and cost effective no doubt. pCons:p1. The number of characters you can program into a particular MD is limited, so if you add a lot of tracks, the song titles will stop being recorded after the character limit has been reached. This will only happen is you record on level 4 (the longest, and why wouldn't you?), around song 65. Otherwise, it's not a huge problem.p2. Some MP3s will not record onto a MD. MP3s recorded at a lower level (meaning the lowest quality, which is the most common since it saves HD space) will not be readable on a MD, and the burner will not allow them to be copied. I don't know the reason for this, but it is problematic.p3. While the burning software provided is excellent, the jukebox software is horrible. It is cumbersome and frustrating, and since the instructions are inadequate, I recommend avoiding it. If you have Windows Media or I-Tunes, there is no need for it anyway. pThe MZ-N1 was a wise purchase for me, if for nothing more than the USB cradle that saves loads of recording time. It is remarkably durable and easy to use, so it is a great purchase for both people buying one for the first time, or upgrading their old one.

Sony's minidisc format became a portable digital music standard before the age of MP3s. Sadly, though, minidisc lost its favor as MP3 players became ubiquitous. Sony aims to flare back up with their NetMD line, minidisc players that can also connect to your PC for transferring downloaded music.p As we ran the NetMD MZ-N1 through its paces, we were often pleasantly surprised, and sometimes downright annoyed, but mostly impressed with this pricey but versatile digital music player.p First off, you can use the optical connection cable to transfer songs directly from your stereo (CD player, DVD player, Xbox, etc.) to the NetMD. Like traditional minidiscs, the transfer takes place in real time, so a three-minute song takes three minutes to move.p With Sony's OpenMG software you can also move songs from your PC to the NetMD. But your music files must be converted to the OpenMG standard before being moved over, which slows down the transfer rate. We were able to move music at the rate of about one minute per three-minute song (although songs transferred more quickly on subsequent transfers since the conversion process had already been completed).p Ironically, Sony's NetMD Simple Burner, which allows you to transfer songs directly from your PC's CD-ROM drive to the NetMD, proved more efficient. It took us only 10 minutes to move an entire 45-minute album to the NetMD.p Unfortunately, you can officially only move tracks from minidisc to the PC that made the reverse trip: you can't load up the NetMD with songs from a CD in your stereo and then transfer them to your PC. We say "officially" because there's a workaround: connect the NetMD's headphone output to your sound card's input and then catch the music with a software mixer. Users with an advanced audio setup such as Creative Labs' Extigy can easily handle the process.p Transfer caveats aside, the NetMD is a well-designed digital music player with excellent sound output. Its mid-cord remote control, complete with backlight LCD display, clips onto your shirt and puts tools for manipulating the sound menus close at hand. And the inexpensive minidisc format means that you can load up lots of your favorite albums (at the highest compression level of LP4, a minidisc can hold almost 300 minutes of music). In addition to the rechargeable battery, you can connect a single AA battery to the NetMD to increase your play time to up to 110 hours.p It's not an inexpensive player, but its increased versatility, expansive removable media, and long battery life make it worth the extra dough. Has the freedom and flexibility that mp3 players lack! - Cecillia -
Although minidisc players have never caught on in the US, I still continue to support them over mp3 players because of the freedom that they allow users. With mp3 player (I have iPods in mind because I know how they work), you connect it to your computer and it updates your entire library in only a few minutes. The MZ-N1 cannot boast such high transfer speeds, unfortunately. However, if you are like me and have an old laptop that is already chock full of mp3s, you are going to have a problem with uploading all those CDs when you don't even have room for another mp3! And don't think about deleting them after you put them on your mp3 player... because the next time you update, your tracks will have disappeared. br /br /So that is why I've chosen to use MDs: They are cheap, can be recorded over millions of times without wear, enable song transfer from your computer via either USB or analog, enable song transfer from the stereo, radio, TV, etc. and there's a mic input for recording meetings or lectures. br /br /If you already know about MDs and are thinking of an upgrade, the MZ-N1 is a vast improvement on their old models. It is a bit hard to find in the US, but if you get a chance and are an MD fan or would like to continue snubbing the annoyingly ubiquitous iPod, I think it is worth the money and effort. In comparison to my old Sony MD (MZ-R700), well sadly there is no comparison. N1 has headphone out and line out (for use with car adapters or speakers), as well as mic in and line in. It is smaller (without that dumb stick-out AA battery speed bump in the back), comes with a cradle for Net MD capability and recharging, and many more options in the menu (most importantly, treble and bass adjustment!).br /br /It is tiny, cute, and lightweight with a sturdy aluminum body--great for those commutes to work or class. And I'm so thankful that Sony made it quiet this time around! It was quite annoying to use my loudly whirring old MD in the library, with people shooting me "shush!" looks. The Net MD capability is okay... but not spectacular. I use Real One player to transfer songs, which is an improvement over the software they provide. But I am accustomed to recording analog anyway. br /br /I highly recommend this MD player to all MD fans, wannabe MD fans, iPod haters and mixtape making lovers.

Great Product - -
I recieved this product as a birthday present. This product is a very solid piece of electronic. It works well with no problem. It is easy to use and very straight forward. Sony MD players are great!!!
