I'm suprised this model is still on Amazon...I bought this model almost two years ago, and I still am using it (though I'm in the market for an upgrade).pHere are some things not so good about the model:br* First there is no lcd display on the actual unit. So you really need to have the remote to see things like battery usage, if the power is turned off, and also to do things like choose play modes. I left my MD in my car one day - and the sun half melted the remote (silly me) - it's hanging in there even still - but once it finally goes..... I'll need a new remote or a new playerbr* My unit tends to skip if I put it on my waist belt and jog - I hate that. If I hold it in my hands - no problem. If I have it on the belt - and walk - no problem.br* Battery usage is excellent. I get better mileage from what is advertised (over 16 hours).pI certainly wouldn't buy this model - there are new ones on the market for the same price or less. It is a good player though.

This thing really is great. It is true that you can get 50hrs. of use off of one AA battery. I have had this MD player for two years and I love it! It is just a rock solid machine; that's all there is to it. The discs are great too. they are small, lite and easy to carry. They are pretty cheep(.50 app.) too, considering that they hold five hours of tones. The only thing about them is that you can't find them in stores, but you can get them on Amazon.com. It is not an ipod, but, in some ways I thank it is better. For one thing, it is SOOOO much cheaper, and frankly, it's more reliable than an ipod because there's not as much that can go wrong. It's not as sophisticated as an ipod. Though it's not quite as small and portable as an ipod, it really does have some advantages over it, I think. I am sorry that MD players never realy caught on, because they are realy cool. I wish more people knew about them. So, if your looking at this, GET ONE! You can afford it and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Sony MZ-NF520D Net MD Walkman (White)

Sony MZ-NF520D Net MD Walkman (White) Review

I read a lot of reviews, and I've learned two things: #1 Can't please everybody. #2 If you take TOO much stock in what you read, you'll never buy anything. Last year I was looking to buy a higher end keybaord and every good review I read, some others tanked it down. I don't ever before remember seeing such a wide scattered variety of opinions on this Sony Net MD, but here's mine. This for me, is perfect. I'd buy 10 of them. Some don't like the idea that you can't record other MD's back to your computer, or the softwarte or ipods are better or whatever. You may not use it for what I do, but this is perfect for 2 very important uses for me. I'm in a cover band (we do not write our own songs), but its so easy to use mini disks and the remotes for them. For practices, we use Sonys MDS-JE-480 home stereo MD player(about 0.00) It's better than using CD's (Cause you don't have to keep changing them for every time you need to listen to the next song), or mp3's, computers, or anything else I've EVER used. You can add, move, or delete songs as you need, or erase the MD completely to use over again(try that on a CD!). The other thing I use it for is playback of a baseball game. My other recorder records the game(xm radio has made this part a dream come true)and this unit is my playback, so I can listen to the games ANYTIME-ANYWHERE. And there's one more thing: It will play back my old music albums that are out of print. My other recorder can record digital or analog and the MD walkman will play either one back on the disk, and now with prices cheap, they're a steal...something for everybody!

I love it. - Susan Cromby -
I bought one of these a few years ago and didn't pay anywhere near this ridiculous price. I got mine at Circuit City which has gone the way of the Dodo now, but I got a good deal. You have to buy the little mini-discs and each disc holds about 75 song and you can erase and rerecord freely. I like to put on a disc and just let it play though but you have the option of skipping around. The batteries last a long time and it's easy to download from your computer. (You do need a computer to make it work!) I don't mind carrying around a couple discs. They are only about 2X2. It's very sturdy and easy to use. I have an Ipod and this is much easier to find specific songs on.

Minidisc player - Benedict M. Kempinski -
This minidisc did the basics of recording and playback very well, considering it was so inexpensive. The added feature of an FM radiobr /was a pleasant surprise. Lotsa music for the buck and less expensive thenbr /the over-rated MP3,which is in the same ATRAC format.

Sony MZ-NF810CK Net MD MiniDisc Recorder with Car Kit

Sony MZ-NF810CK Net MD MiniDisc Recorder with Car Kit Review

I've had this minidisc recorder for about 1.5 months. I wanted to review features/shortcomings that I didn't notice other reviewers comment on for those that want to get a MD for live recording, not for recording gobs and gobs of material onto one disc. (For recording from the computer to the mini disc, I already have a digital out on my computer so I have never tried using the Net MD software.)pFirst of all, my experience with the mini discs in general has been very positive. I have been a huge supporter of mini disc ever since I got my first player in Japan in 1997. Due to their ability to easily re-record, edit, move around tracks, title tracks, on the spot excellent sounding recordings (no tape hiss), etc. I have gone through two portable recorders and two deck units. These are the older mini disc systems, before Net MD. My portable died so I wanted to get a replacement. I did not want Net MD as high-speed or long play discs are not compatible with the old system. There are work arounds of course or I could buy a new Net MD compatible deck, but I would rather not at this time. (I found this out first-hand about 1 year ago when I tried to play on my deck a music class lecture/jam session disc my friend recorded using a portable Net MD recorder.)pI like to create my own 'best of' mixes on mini disc to hear on the go, however, the main reason behind my love of mini disc is the excellent quality of live recordings (versus analogue tape) for the cheap price. I want to use the portable to record live musicians and then listen to the disc on the deck unit. I searched and searched to find new portable recorders with a mic input and without Net MD technology but could not find one. Another requirement of mine was that the player come with a rechargable slim battery and a casing for AA batteries. (Duel battery power sources is a must for portable devices used in live situations.) I also didn't want to spend too much money. I carefully read as much as I could find on the Sony MZ-NF810CK before I bought it. This is my first Sony mini disc player.pMy big complaint about this recorder is that you cannot adjust the recording level while it is recording. (This was possible on my previous portable recorders.) The recording level can only be adjusted while it is in record/pause mode. This is a hindrance during live recordings. Distortion is very unkind to digital recordings and if you have to pause your recording in order to fix the level, you will have a mini disc with gaps in the performance. Due to moving around to find a sweet spot, the fluctuation in sound levels, and the poor lighting in some recording situtations, it can take a few minutes to adjust the levels properly.pAnother complaint of mine is that it is too easy to create new tracks by accidentally pressing on the "track mark" button. There should be some sort of lock for it. This wouldn't be so bad if the player had the "combine" function but it does not, in other words, you cannot undo a split track. Once you split a track, you have to put the disc in another mini disc with the "combine" function in order to put the tracks back together. (I use my deck for this.) pOther than the above gripes, the player is great. It does have features that I have not had in previous portables. It has EQ functions, long-play stereo and mono modes, and a radio. It also lets you group music into "groups", much like how a folder/directory functions in computer terms. The player itself is extremely small and light. These portables just get smaller and lighter each year. My friend has a complaint about the ever decreasing size of the players as she finds the buttons harder and harder to press separately, without pressing more than 1 button at a time (they are squished together too tightly). Future functionality of portables is a concern of mine if features are being deleted such as the "combine" function.pAs another reviewer pointed out, it would be nice to have a backlight on the display but that is not critical for me. I am also one of those people who likes to play music very loud and agree with another reviewer who thinks this portable does not play loud enough. I have found that in order to get the loudest sound possible, you have to turn off any sort of EQ setting. Those settings severly dampen the sound. I connected the portable to my car stereo with the EQ on and had to turn on the car stereo volume all the way in order to hear the music at what I call a normal person's level, (a level that doesn't interfere with conversation). Not being one for conversation, I wanted the music even louder. I do not recommend turning on the EQ setting while connected to a car stereo because you may forget how loud your stereo is and blow out your speakers once you change to the radio or disconnect the mini disc player.

Excellent product - best MD recorder in class - M. Detko - Scarborough, Ontario Canada
OK, I have reviewed the comments here and "an electronics fan" has skewed this product unfairly due to a reliance on software made by Micro-soft. I own a Macintosh computer, so there is no software for this product. This didn't matter to me, as I have a recording studio built into my computer.br /The reason I picked up this unit was because I could record uncompressed PCM audio using an external microphone, or by plugging a line-level signal into the line in/optical jack. Contrary to another comment here, the record level can be adjusted while the unit is in rec/pause mode, and also while in recording mode. It also remembers the last setting which is extremely practical. The sound quality depends largely on the mic used. I paid the extra money and purchased the highest-end Sony mic and the results were much better than with the first mic, which was only about cheaper. I found the sound to be excellent, and a little eq, for instance using the "Jazz" setting or a custom setting works very well. For transfer to CD I would capture the audio to my computer (using Cubase SX2 and an AD converter) and then burn to CD later. It has an optical out but I never tried it. Yes this means that recording must be transferred real-time. If I was to make a complaint, I would say that for uncompressed PCM (WAV) recordings, the audio output is kind of low, so that you have to turn your audio amp way up to hear the music at a decent volume, then turn it down again for normal listening. This of course is solved by increasing the volume level of your audio files (normalizing) before burning to CD. I never used the MP3 options, or radio or any other features. For my purposes, recording live music and making noiseless dubs of studio recordings, it was perfect and convenient. The unit is sturdy, made of metal (titanium) with metal mechanics, and not plastic like the newer cheaper models. I bought this unit in November 2003 for 0 Canadian.

Speechless!! This product is so great I couldn't believe it - G. R. -
I received this md player as a gift and it has been, by far, the best gift I`ve got. I read a lot of reviews coplaining about the software, well I can tell you it coudln't be easier to use, it's quiete simple, so much you do not really need to go to de manual to get the hang of it. The md has a really nice design, specially this model, because of the recharchable battery, which is very slim, aside, this kit includes so many usefull accesories you wouldn't believe it. The sound quality, even at the lowest bitrate, is awesome, so you can record the so promised 5 hours on each disc without really loosing sound quality. In short...a great product overall.

Sony MZ-N505S Net MD Walkman Player/Recorder (Silver)

Sony MZ-N505S Net MD Walkman Player/Recorder (Silver) Review

If you can stream it, you can record it. Anything that has a headphones output can be recorded into the MD. I'm talking about real time recording. Yes the Mp3 player can download music files more quickly but you can not record in real time with the Mp3 players. For example, I like to record internet radio stations. Also I have an internet music player service for a month that allows me to listen to a HUGE selection of music all day long but I can not transfer any song to an Mp3 player with out actually buying the track for . Well as I said above... if you can stream it you can record it to MD... you know what I'm sayin? Also the long play of the MD allows about 150 minutes per MD. I use this rate for everything. Most of the internet DJ mixes (shows) I like are 2 hours long so it works well for me. Also I have about a dozed MD's that I keep in circulation, because they are re-recordable. I've erased and recorded on each disk god knows how many times. I own the Sony Recording MD Walkman MZ-R700... I bought it 6 years ago and it still plays/records... however its on its last leg... that is the reason I'm browsing through the Amazon store looking to buy a new one. Also a single AA battery will play for what I'm guessing to be about 40 hours, however a fresh AA will only record for about 1-2 hours (so keep the AC adapter handy for recording. Also there are 2 inputs for recording. One is the MIC in (yes you can also record live music or your professors lecture using a microphone) however i notice that input tends to introduce static and white noise. this can be a probem if you are hoping the MD player will automaticall create a new track number when it picks up a second or two of silence. the second input is optical. The MD player comes with a converter so you can convert the USB output to an Optical signal that records clean. One draw back to that I've noticed (and you computer folks out ther can solve this problem) that when you use the USB output the sound from the headphones output on your computer turns off. You can only monitor (listen) to what you are recording via the headphones output on the MD player... this sucks if you are trying to queue up songs in a mix or recording only segments of a radio program or a comedy show or something.

MD Player problems - Solon J. Bing -
when i went to purchase this product it said that it "was like new". so with the seller saying that on the page makes on believe that the only things that could be wrong with it is a mark in tha paint or screen, stuff like that. well when i got the product here. i can't hear sound out of the left side unless i use a rubberband to press the plug towards the backside of the device just to maybe hear full sound if i don't move once i get it to work. so needless to say i'm a bit unhappy with what was told to me and what i recieved.

GREAT AND INGENIOUS INVENTION - JON STRICKLAND - Smithfield, NC United States
The Sony MZ-N505, when it first came out, was like a miracle gadget. After years of allotting the minidisc storage capacity to a maximum of 74 or 80 minutes per disc, Sony invented the LP2 and LP4 recording modes which allowed at least three hours and five hours, respectively. A great product this truly is, and it almost surprised me that there was not the marketing breakthrough that would vanquish companies who were pushing the non-minidisc MP3 players. br /br /I thought and still think that the competitors' products were inferior; however, the latter group had a dual advantage: where Sony was limited to the seemingly obsolete ATRAC/SonicStage software, their gadgets could download and burn CDs using Windows Media Player, Real Player, Napster and the like. This lone fact is what I think discouraged MD sales. Sony apparently has given up on this great invention, which I think is a shame.br /br /Since the Sony MZ-505, there has been the HI-MD format, which allows a greater recording storage capacity than LP2 or LP4. Also, this particular line allows PCM quality recording but at a lower storage capacity. Still, the MZ-505 is a great item with its prior NET-MD capabilities. With the minidisc-compatible technology that has been created since 2002, when I purchased this item, there is so much that you can still do! br /br /There are companies such as Xitel and M-Audio that have come out with driver updates and products that have made this particular product compatible with Windows XP and Windows Vista so that you can access major nonsubscription MP3 and WAV file downloadable sources. br /br /So for those who have thought of discarding their MD players and discs, I say don't!br /

Sony MZ-B10 MiniDisc Voice Recorder

Sony MZ-B10 MiniDisc Voice Recorder Review

This item is great, I gave it to my girlfriend so that she could record her choir's performances in Ireland. It produced excellent sound, has good battery life, and a reliable onboard mic. I used SoundForge to transfer the audio to my PC and edited from there for a compilation CD. For the product, I say A+. However, after trying to purchase it here and striking out, I ended up going with JR Electronics, who I fully recommend.br /br /On Monday, June 5, I ordered the Sony MZ-B10 from Warehouse Deals, an Amazon.com subsidiary that handles all their returned, refurbished, and overstock merchandise. At 0, I was saving off the lowest advertised price (and it lists for 9). After selecting the expedited shipping option, a package arrived on Friday (well within their advertised time for expedited shipping).br /br /Upon opening the package, however, I discovered that they sent me someone else's order. I received two adolescent psychology books that should have gone to Los Angeles.br /br /Figuring it would be a simple matter to send my package back, explain the situation, and get my minidisc recorder, I was then told that they could not send me the MZ-B10 because they only had one. More surprisingly, they told me that even if they recovered the item, they could not pass it back to me, but would instead sell it again on Amazon.com. While refunding my money, they explained that because of their error, there was no possible way for me to get my purchase.br /br /After speaking to a manager at Amazon.com named Eric, he gave me a 0 promotional credit towards an Amazon.com purchase. With my 0 refund and the 0 credit, I could then purchase another MZ-B10 for 0 (new) and have for my trouble. Unfortunately, I discovered that the promotional credit I received was not good in the whole Amazon.com Marketplace, and that the MZ-B10 is not available directly through Amazon. br /br /After speaking to another manager, named Nikki, I was told that there was no possible way a credit could be issued that would be good throughout the Amazon.com Marketplace. This, despite the fact that I am a frequent Amazon.com Visa user, and am aware that their reward certificates are good throughout Amazon.com, partner vendor or not. She refused to change my promotional credit to a reward credit.br /br /While I have been a frequent and loyal Amazon.com customer for many years, I will not be patronizing them in the future. The fact that they can allow a subsidiary to sell me a product, not deliver it, and if they recover it sell the item again, is just unacceptable. While I appreciate the 0 promotional credit, and am glad that my money is being refunded, what I really want is the item, which is going to cost me no less than more, take me more time, and isn't even available directly from Amazon.com (which makes the 0 credit pretty useless).br /br /Thanks for nothing Amazon.

Sony MZ-R55 Portable MiniDisc Player and Recorder

Sony MZ-R55 Portable MiniDisc Player and Recorder Review

My first review of a minidisc player was done in 2001. It was for the MZ-R70 blue model. pI have bought this MZ-R55 2nd hand, which is in fact, over 3 years old. The unit (recorder and all supplies) work like a charm. It works better than the MZ-R70, for it's faster when skipping tracks, and it runs the TOC EDIT faster than my other model, which is an MZ-R50 silver model. Yes, I have 3 minidisc players. May I say, even though many people have rated the MZ-R55 down, I love it. All you have to do is have a little patience, and take care of the Unit.pI like the backlit remote, which is excellently handy when you don't want to flip the player/recorder in and out of your pocket every two minutes to raise the volume or change song.pThe unit's shell takes a lot more abuse than that of the MZ-R70. The paint doesn't come off as easy, and even though the unit may be a bit heavier, at least I'm more aware of the fact that there's something fragile in my pocket. I think that 4 hours of battery life is halfway decent if not acceptable. What I mean, is that 4 hours is fine by me. I don't go out much, and that leaves less wareTear on the unit. pLet me tell you...the bass in the collapsible headphones is outstanding. These headphones sport the best digital bass that I have ever heard. May I also add, you don't have to turn the volume up too high, to drown out the exterior sound around you. I find myself not having to put the volume up past 50%. pThe AA battery compartment is handy to have when your NH-14WM (Nickel-Metal Hydride Battert) loses its charge. Just today I went out with the compartment attached, and voila, it's there when I need it.pMy MZ-R55 is the silver model. Even though I bought this unit second hand, it seems to have withstood a lot of time, and everything I expected it to be, it has lived up to its SONY name.pThe carrying pouch is genuninely handy to have, if you're going out in the harsher of climates. That way, it won't get wet or humid. Another thing, the headphones, being as short as they are, are practical for someone who always puts their mini-disc player in their shirt pocket, with or without the remote. The only thing wrong with that, is that you can't really turn your head too far from in front of the unit, or you will be pulling on the wire.pFor the 3 Volt power supply adaptor, I am happy about it, because it's the same voltage as for my MZ-R70. They both share adaptors, and one is always near the stereo for playing through big bass speakers. One is always there for the personal listening pleasure at my desk. brThe whole shebang comes in a neat little rectangular box, which is great for storing, and great for placing my other mini-disc players and their accessories when not in use.pI would recommend you go on an internet site for SONY mini-disc players, to print out their service manuals for each individual model. I have a manual printed out for each of my 3 units. Kind of comes in handy when you know a little about electronics.pI am happy with this product, and would recommend this to anyone, even those fussy people who nag about every little problem they encounter.pHope this review has helped you.

replaces tape recorders - STEEVO! - Minneapolis MN
Normal MD's are basically a novelty whose charm wears off the second you try to actually record one. If you want to record a MD at CD quality, you need a CD player with an optical output, which is not common, an optical cable (sold separately) and you must be willing to sit for the entire duration of the CD without so much as bumping the recorder. On the R-55, the unit is quite heavy, especially if the AA battery pack is attached, which is constantly because the rechargeable is weaker than my grandma on morphine. pDespite all this, the MD has some good qualities. They're virtualy indestructable, and you get surprisingly good sound quality. The edit and delete functions are fantastic, making compilations simple to create and edit. Straight CD rips are easy as well, if you've got the time. However the coolest feature I found was the microphone. You can just plug an ordinary pair of headphones into the microphone jack, press record and listen to your drunken antics or anything else anytime you want, even separate the night into different tracks. pIf you're looking to replace that old walkman this is for you, but stick with a discman or MP3 player otherwise.

Sony MZ-NHF800 Hi-MD Minidisc Walkman Portable Music Player

Sony MZ-NHF800 Hi-MD Minidisc Walkman Portable Music Player Review

Many of the reviews of this machine contain old or incorrect information. There is a WAV converion tool at this point, and you can burn CD's that will play on any CDR compatiable player right out of sonicstage. I have done this, and I have recorded live music and burned CD's, and recorded Cassette tapes, and burned CD's. It's all there on Sonicstage 2.3. br /br /Good:br /1. You can do all the things mentioned above. br /2. Huge amount of space on a disc. I recorded old radio programs onto a HI-MD disc at 48bps, and got the claimed 45 hours (or close to it) on the one little disc. No good for music (at that rate-music sounds great at 132 bps and above), but great for voice. br /3. The machine has a mic input for live recordings. Sounds pretty good at higher sample rates. br /4. The machine can be used as a data drive like a memory stick. Just don't fire up Sonicstage and go to MY COMPUTER. Very easy to use. br /5. The Sony Music store is OK, and I enjoyed the five free downloads.br /br /Bad:br /1. The build quality seems not that great (this is where the machine loses the star). The little metal clasp that "snaps" the two parts together seems very light (but I notice this same clasp is on a MD I have used for two years with no problems).br /2. The disks are hard to get (but that is changing), and a little expensive (but not bad for the capacity).br /3. Doesn't make me want an ipod any less.

AFTER ALMOST 4 YEARS WOULD NOT TRADE FOR ANY I-POD - JON STRICKLAND - Smithfield, NC United States
The Sony MZ-NHF800 Hi-MD Minidisc Walkman is an awesome machine that is equipped with AM/FM/TV/Weatherband radio controls. With the 1 GB minidiscs and the minidisc-compatible technology that has been created since 2004, when I purchased this item, there is so much that you can do with this recorder that it is staggering!br /br /It is amazing how this player, when combined with the right gear, can access MP3s and WAV files, and it does it in ways that I don't think that the Ipod can. For those who have thought of giving up on MD, I say don't! Especially the HI-MD!br /br /There are companies that have come out with driver updates and products that have made this particular product compatible even with Windows Vista. Among them are Xitel and M-Audio.br /br /I am excited about seeing what more I can continue to do with this recorder, whether on the computer or on the field! Forgive the exclamations, but I am not hamming all this up.

Problems galore.... - B. WRIGHT -
I bought this product a little over a year ago, and was happy with it for a while. Then it malfunctioned. Sony duly replaced the unit. The unit went unused for a while and then once i began to use it for a while lo and behold, it malfunctioned again in exactly the same manner. As the unit is out of warranty and I will have to pay for the repair, I am now looking at taking my money elsewhere...
